FOC CARTS
Carros de Foc is a circular route of 56 km and almost 9,000 meters of accumulated elevation gain and loss. It joins the 9 shelters of the National Park of Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici, one of the 14 National Parks of Spain, the only one in Catalonia. It was officially created in 1999, although it had already begun to be carried out since 1987 by the guards of the refuges visiting each other. One of these guards baptized it thus.
The route takes between 4 and 8 days. You can start wherever you want. The altitudes of the route range between 1,900 and 2,800 meters. It is required to be in good physical shape and have experience in high mountain trekking or if not, hire one of our guides.
In some passes the snow remains well into the summer, as the average altitude of the route is 2400m. The weather is very unstable, with frequent thunderstorms at midday or mid-afternoon on hot days.
Along the route we find large forests and valleys, huge waterfalls, about 200 lakes, rugged peaks, surprising meanders such as those of Aigüestortes, and a rich biological diversity.
The route has no special marking. In some sections it shares the path with the GR11 where we will find red and white paint marks. Other sections are marked with wooden stakes painted yellow and most of the time we will follow the path thanks to the milestones. The use of the map is essential.
There is a Forfait that is collected in the first refuge and that will be stamped in all the refuges visited (similar to the Camino de Santiago).
